The President met the ruling alliance members and a total of 26 political parties that support his government prior to taking today's decision. All present at the meeting expressed their fullest cooperation and support to the candidacy of President Rajapaksa, Minister Yapa said.
However, a date for the presidential polls has not been decided yet. The Election Commissioner is expected to announce the date soon. Local media reports say the election will likely be held in the third week of January.
The President is seeking a fresh mandate two years ahead of the end of his first term which is due to end in 2011 to capitalize on his immense popularity after ending the three-decade long war with the LTTE rebels.
