Two foreign companies to assist reconstruction of Sri Lanka's Northern rail track

Nov 22, Colombo: An Indian company has expressed its willingness to assist Sri Lanka to reconstruct the Northern rail track from Omanthai to Pallai in the Jaffna peninsula, the government said.
The Railway Department said an agreement to be signed to reconstruct the 96 kilo meter track is being prepared currently, officials said.
Meanwhile a Chinese company has agreed to assist the Railway Department to construct the rail track from Pallai to Kankasanthurai (KKS).
The reconstruction of the Northern rail track, known as Yal Devi track is to be carried out in two stages.
In Phase One, the track is reconstructed from Vavuniya to Pallai, an approximate distance of. 103 km.
Work on Phase Two from KKS downwards to Pallai, another 67 km, will be conducted simultaneously.
The track has already been reconstructed from Vavuniya to Omanthai. As the Army continues to de-mine and clear the North, reconstruction of the track will proceed northwards.
The LTTE has completely destroyed the train track and the stations along the track during their occupation of the region.
