U.S. advises its citizens not to travel to Northern Sri Lanka yet

Nov 20, Colombo: The United States State Department warned the American citizens on travelling to Northern Sri Lanka despite the end of the war between the government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) six months ago.
Renewing its travel warning on Sri Lanka the State Department said the travel is risky especially to the northernmost areas and most of the Eastern Province as there are still uncleared landmines and potential for incidents by escaped LTTE cadres.
Replacing its June 26, 2009 warning, the State Department urged its citizens to be vigilant while traveling in Sri Lanka as post-conflict hazards may still be present in the North and the East.
"U.S. citizens are advised to defer all travel to the Northern Province and the northernmost areas of the North Central Province, as defined by the A14 road, Medawachiya town, and the road from Medawachchiya to Horowupatna," the travel advisory warned.
While acknowledging no LTTE incidents have occurred since the end of the war the US authorities advised the U.S. citizens against travel on public buses in Sri Lanka.
"There is no indication that U.S. citizens or institutions were, or currently are, specific targets, but U.S. citizens risk becoming victims by being in the wrong place at the wrong time," it said.
