Nov 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa assured the visiting top ranking Unite Nations official that the resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the north could be completed within the next few weeks.
President Rajapaksa gave this assurance when he met UN Under Secretary General, Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Sir John Holmes at the Temple Trees Thursday to discuss the IDP situation.
The President informed the UN official that the already resettled IDPs have been provided with infrastructure facilities and common amenities with full security and the remaining civilians will also be resettled as soon as their housing problems are solved.
The UN official welcoming the recent releases from the camps highlighted the need to release the remaining quickly. He particularly noted that the Menik Farm camp had only half the number of displaced now from the number there were during his previous visit.
He said the returnees were pleased that they could go home while the remaining civilians seem happy that their turn would soon come.
Holmes reaffirmed the UN's commitment to working with the Sri Lankan government to improve the return process, and to ensure satisfactory conditions in areas of return, especially in the fields of shelter, basic services, and livelihoods. Demining and mine-risk education were also important to ensuring the safety of returnees, he added.
"The UN is also keen to support longer-term recovery and reconstruction," Holmes said.
Praising the government for its timely efforts taken for the welfare of the IDPs, Holmes assured the President that UN would provide utmost support to the resettlement process in the North.
