Flood threat rises in Southern Sri Lanka

Nov 20, Colombo: The government authorities have warned the residents of the city as well as the devotees to the most sacred Kataragama city in Southern Sri Lanka to be vigilant as the water level of the famous Menik River could rise tonight.
According to the irrigation officials of the area the sluice gates of the Veheragala Tank could be opened to night as its water level has already risen to spill limits.
S. Kannangoda, the Irrigation Director of the Veheragala Tank said the water level in the Menik River certainly will rise if the sluice gates are opened.
Meanwhile the Meteorology Department said more rains are expected tonight all over the country, especially in the Southern Province.
The Department urged the people in the central hill areas to pay more attention to their environments as heavy rains could cause landslides.
