Sri Lanka planning to import H1N1 vaccine

Nov 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka health authorities are discussing with the World Health Organization (WHO) officials to import the Influenza A/H1N1 vaccine, Health Ministry sources said.
Pandemic influenza A/H1N1 is spreading in the country and there had been 132 confirmed cases to date according to the Epidemiology Unit.
The vaccine however will only be available to the high risk groups who are vulnerable to complications arising from the flu, health officials said.
The high risk groups include pregnant women, children, and people with chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes and heart or Kidney disease.
Several deaths reported from Kandy, Matara, and Anuradhapura Districts of patients with flu symptoms are suspected to be from the H1N1 flu.
The education officials of the Central Province meanwhile, have decided to close all the schools in the Province from Monday over the fears of Influenza A-H1N1 spreading in the area.
