Nov 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka's opposition is to lodge a complaint at the Election Secretariat against the newly released Rs. 1000 currency note by the Central Bank.
Speaking to the media, the leader of the People's Faction of Sri Lanka Freedom Party parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera said the currency note bearing President Mahinda Rajapaksa's picture would be election propaganda ahead of the upcoming crucial polls.
"As the opposition we strongly oppose this currency note," he said.
According to the former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, pictures of living leaders have never been used on currency notes in the country before.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka on Tuesday (Nov 17) issued a commemorative note in the denomination of 1000 rupees to mark the ushering of peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka six months ago.
The note depicts the image of President in the right with a map of Sri Lanka with the rising sun in the background.
