Sri Lankan Tamil MPs meet UN humanitarian chief

Nov 19, Colombo: The United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Sir John Holmes this morning met with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians to discuss the progress of the government's resettlement process and the plight of the displaced still living in the welfare camps.
The TNA said that they have discussed several issues related to the ongoing resettlements in the North as well LTTE prisoners issue at Anuradhapura prison with the high ranking UN official.
The TNA members have asked the UN official to intervene to resolve the Tamil prisoners issue at the Anuradhapura prison.
A team of Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians who visited the Menik farm Welfare Village this week said they were pleased with the government's efforts to resettle the IDPs and they are optimistic that all the displaced would be resettled by the end of January next year.
Holmes has confirmed that more than half the displaced civilians in the welfare camps have been sent back to their villages and welcomed the development.
Meanwhile the visiting UN official last night met with Sri Lanka Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.
The Foreign Ministry said Holmes expressed his gratification to Sri Lanka Government for their speedy measures to resettle the displaced persons.
During the discussions, Foreign Minister outlined the resettlement process and demining activities which had taken place so far and highlighted the fact that the number of IDPs was declining on a daily basis due to the rapid pace of the resettlement process, a Foreign Ministry statement said.
Bogollagama requested the UN official to consider providing more assistance in the areas of demining, infrastructure development, and livelihood enhancement for the recently resettled IDPs during the meeting.
The Under Secretary-General is to meet Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa tonight.
