UN top official satisfied with resettlement process in Sri Lanka North

Nov 18, Colombo: The United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Sir John Holmes visited the welfare centers in Northern Sri Lanka today.
The UN official first visited Menik Farm camp in Chettikulam, Vavuniya this afternoon where he was warmly welcomed by the Vavuniya Government Agent P.S.M Charles and the Vanni Security Forces Commander Major General Kamal Gunaratne.
Holmes later visited the Kadirgamar, Arunachalam and Ananada Coomaraswamy relief villages to observe the living conditions of the welfare camps in Vavuniya.
The Under Secretary-General who arrived in the country yesterday for a four-day official visit on the invitation from Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama visited Jaffna soon after his arrival.
Sri Lanka's Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights figures say a total of 143,161 IDPs have been returned or released as of Nov 13.
Following the visits Holmes expressed his satisfaction over the ongoing resettlement process of the Internally Displaced Persons in the camps.
He said had that he was pleased with the facilities offered to the IDPs by the government of Sri Lanka.
A team of Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians who visited the Menik farm Welfare Village yesterday said they were pleased with the government's efforts to resettle the IDPs and they are optimistic that all the displaced would be resettled by the end of January next year.
Sir John Holmes is to meet with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama this evening.
