* Sri Lanka polls chief rejects application submitted by JVP for a new party
Wed, Nov 18, 2009, 08:58 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 18, Colombo: The Elections Secretariat today rejected an application put forward by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) to register a new political party.

The Election Secretariat said that the Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has decided to reject it as the new party could not be registered under the existing political parties registration act.

The JVP has sought the approval from the polls chief for a new party for the sole purpose of introducing a common candidate for the upcoming Presidential election next year.

JVP MP Lakshman Nipunarachchi was named as the president of the new political party while Dimuthu Abeykoon was named as the Secretary of the party.
