Nov 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition, United National Party ( UNP) says that they could agree with several points put forward by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) over a common candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Speaking at a press briefing held in Colombo this afternoon, the General Secretary of the UNP, parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said that the key points highlighted by the JVP to support a common candidate at the next presidential election, are acceptable.
According to Attanayake the newly formed United National Front (UNF) had commenced negotiations with all the opposition political parties on the common candidate issue.
He said that a common candidate for the UNF will be announced soon after the President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced the elections.
Attanayake accused the government of attempting to get the support of several political parties who support UNF by offering various bribes.
The government has established an espionage system to monitor our movements and interactions with those concerned, he added.
The government has earlier dismissed the opposition alliance saying that most of the parties in the alliance are one-man parties.
