* No more restrictions on A-9 highway in Northern Sri Lanka
Wed, Nov 18, 2009, 08:18 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 18, Colombo: Returning normalcy to the war-scarred northern region, the Sri Lankan government has lifted all restrictions that had been imposed on the civilians in the North reaching the South along the recently reopened A-9 highway, the only land route to Jaffna, from today.

Major General G.A Chandrasiri, the Governor of Northern province said all the restrictions on the main Jaffna-Kandy highway had been lifted on the advice of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

President Rajapaksa has decided to remove the restrictions as the security situation is stable in the peninsula following the defeat of the LTTE.

Earlier the civilians in Jaffna peninsula needed to obtain security clearance by producing certificates confirming their residence and a letter giving reasons for going out of the Jaffna peninsula.

No security clearance is further needed for Jaffna civilians to reach Colombo via land routes from today, the Governor added.

Additionally, the truck owners of Jaffna have been given permission by the Defence Secretary to transport goods along the A-9 highway without prior registration.

From today any truck from Jaffna could transport goods to Colombo but they would be checked at the food store at Navatkuli where a fitness certificate would be issued after inspection of the vehicle and authority given to transport goods to Colombo, Government Agent of Jaffna, K.Ganesh said.

Following the end of the war the government opened the A-9 for military traffic in March and for commercial traffic in July.
