* Pro-government unions protest in Sri Lanka capital against work-to-rule campaign
Tue, Nov 10, 2009, 08:19 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 10, Colombo: Several trade unions representing the government faction staged a massive protest campaign today against the scheduled work-to-rule campaign by four major unions with effect from midnight today.

This protest campaign was staged in front of the Fort Railway Station this evening under the guidance of Alavi Moulana, the Governor of Western province and a former union leader.

At least 3,000 persons including ministers, provincial councilors, and pro-government unions have participated in this protest campaign.

During the protest the Governor of Western province told the media that they are attempting to protect the government from opposition conspiracies that are underway to topple the government.

He further said that it was very unfortunate that the trade unions representing main opposition United National Party and Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna are attempting to mislead the country despite the President's promise to increase salaries from next January.

The opposition-backed unions of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Ceylon Electricity Board, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, and the Water Board are to stage a work-to-rule action from midnight today demanding salary increments.

Political analysts in the country says the country is plagued by the union action of public sector employees that cost the country billions due to lost productivity while the private sector is contributing to the development.

The opposition politicians use the unions to get political mileage against the government, especially when the elections are forthcoming, the analysts say. They predict more union actions wreaking havoc in the run up to the general and presidential elections next year.
