European Film Festival in Sri Lanka

Nov 08, Colombo: A film festival organized by the member states of the European Union in Sri Lanka is currently being held in Colombo.
The "European Film Festival 2009", an event jointly organized by the Alliance Française de Colombo with the missions for other EU countries will be held from the 7th to 15th of November 2009 with screenings each day at 5PM and 7PM.
The event is expected to present the diverse and rich cinematic culture in Europe to the Sri Lankan public.
The organizers screened the recently restored Lester James Peiris's masterpiece Gamperaliya (1963) at the opening night yesterday. The restored film has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2009 under the section 'Cannes Classics'.
A selection of short films directed by young Sri Lankan film makers will be presented before the screening of each feature film.
According to the organizers, the main film festival (9 films of 35mm) will take place at the BMICH while the fringe festival (DVD screenings of 21 films) will take place simultaneously at the British Council, Goethe-Institut and Alliance Française.
The European Film Festival is a joint cultural event organized by the Alliance Française de Colombo and the Embassy of France, the Consulate of Belgium, the Embassy of Switzerland, the Embassy of Italy, the Embassy of Norway, the Embassy of Sweden, the Embassy of The Netherlands, the Consulate of Spain, Consulate of the Slovak Republic, the British Council, the Goethe-Institut in association with Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage and National Film Corporation (NFC).
