Nov 07, Colombo: In order to expedite the resettlement process of the displaced civilians in the North, the UNHCR, United Nations humanitarian agency has provided five demining flail machines to help accelerate the demining in the former war-torn land.
The five machines which are due to arrive today will be handed over to the government to dispatch immediately to the North, UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic said yesterday in Geneva.
Sri Lankan Government together with UNDP and other international and local demining organizations is carrying out a fast-paced demining program in the North. The government hopes to resettle all the displaced persons presently housed in the welfare camps by the end of January 2010.
The government recently purchased 15 demining machines from Slovakia and Croatia. A total of 19 demining machines are currently in operation to clear the Northern region of mines and unexploded ordnance to accelerate the reconstruction and resettlement efforts.
According to UNHCR, humanitarian demining and the removal of unexploded ordnance (UXO) are pre-requisites for delivery of humanitarian assistance, early recovery, and development in conflict affected areas.
