* Spokesman for the asylum seekers is a known smuggler, Sri Lanka says

Nov 07, Colombo: The spokesman for the 255 Sri Lankan asylum seekers staying on an Australian boat in Indonesia is a known people smuggler, Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The Foreign Ministry said the Sri Lanka Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia has informed the Ministry that they have confirmed from a reliable source the true identity of the spokesman who called himself as 'Alex'.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the 27-year-old spokesman 'Alex' identified as Kulaendrarajah Sanjeev once belonged to 'Kannan Gang' involved in street fights and was deported from Canada in 2003, after being arrested for trouble making.

He had been involved in human smuggling for a long time and it is believed that his office is based in India. His brother who is now is Canada is also involved in human smuggling, and Canadian Mounted Police are after him, the Ministry reported.

The boat people have refused to depart the Australian vessel which rescued them when they were drifting in Indian Ocean. They have demanded the asylum in Australia and staged a hunger strike and also threatened to blow up the boat.
