Nov 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Government today reiterated its commitment to complete the ongoing resettlement of the conflict-displaced civilians in the North by the end of January next year.

Speaking at a special press briefing held in Presidential Secretariat this evening Human Rights and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said they have already completed half of the resettlement process at the moment.

According to the Ministers the government has already resettled 119,687 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their own villages during the last few months.

The exact figure of internally displaced persons to be resettled now is 143,534, the Minister added.

"Resettling half of the internally displaced persons within a short period of time was a clear achievement of the Government," he said.

Minister Samarasinghe stressed that they will complete this resettlement process on or before the 31st of January 2010.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama yesterday apprised the diplomatic community of the progress on the resettlement process.

He informed the Colombo-based diplomats that speedy resettlement depends on the progress of the demining the area and that the demining is carried out under strict conditions to ensure that the areas will be completely out of danger for civilians after resettlement.
