* General Fonseka returning to Sri Lanka
Wed, Nov 4, 2009, 07:48 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka government today said that the Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka has left the United States this morning to return to Colombo.

Issuing a special media release the Government Information Department confirmed that he was not subjected to any questioning prior to his departure by the United States Department of Homeland Security or any other agency of the US Government.

The US government officials had contacted Gen. Fonseka on October 28 and informed him that they wanted to 'interview' him regarding the Sri Lankan 'Defence Minister' in connection with alleged human rights violations during the war against the LTTE.

General Fonseka was advised by the Sri Lankan government not to attend the interview called for by the US officials, which was scheduled for today in Oklahoma City.

According to the government release, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama immediately met the US Ambassador in Colombo, Ms. Patricia Butenis to point out that the information General Fonseka obtained during his service in the course of his duties, has a privileged status and the US Department of Homeland Security should forthwith desist from interviewing General Fonseka.

The President and the Government of Sri Lanka would stand firmly behind the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff of Sri Lanka. And there would be no room allowed for that high post to be devalued or made vulnerable, the release said.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciates the receptive and constructive attitude adopted by the US authorities, which in turn allowed General Fonseka to leave the United States without any damage to the national interest of Sri Lanka and to the dignity of his Office," it said.
