Mon, Nov 2, 2009, 08:19 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 02, Colombo: Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is to send a special representative to Sri Lanka to discuss the growing illegal migrant's issue.

According to the sources, the Australian Prime Minister has appointed John McCarthy, the former high commissioner to India as his representative for Sri Lanka.

He is to arrive in the country within the next few days to hold discussions with Sri Lankan officials.

The Australian Prime Minister has also telephoned the Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, about the flow of illegal refugees.

Sri Lanka yesterday arrested a group attempting to leave for Australia from Duwa area in Negombo by the sea and seized their boat.

Meanwhile, the Australian government has commenced a massive combined sea and air search operation to rescue the 11 Sri Lankan asylum seekers missing in the Indian Ocean after their boat sank while heading for Australia.
