Nov 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka government today said that it would strongly object to any move by the US Homeland Security Department to question Chief of Defense Staff General Sarath Fonseka.
Speaking at a special press briefing held in Colombo this afternoon Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said the Government of Sri Lanka will under no circumstances, authorize such an illegal act.
According to the Foreign Minister, the President and the Government of Sri Lanka will stand firmly behind the Chief of Defense Staff of Sri Lanka.
Bogollagama stressed that the Government would not allow that high post to be denigrated or made vulnerable.
According to the Minister, CDS General Sarath Fonseka, who is at present in the United States, received a letter from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), calling him for an interview at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday 4 November in Oklahoma City.
Additionally he has also received a telephone call on 28 October during which a DHS Attorney had stated that the objective of the interview is to use him "as a source against human rights violations done by Secretary of Defense", the Minister added.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister met the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ms. Patricia Butenis earlier today, to convey through her the message that the Department of Homeland Security should forthwith desist from any endeavor to interview General Fonseka.
