* Special committee to probe the collapse of underground pedestrian crossing in Sri Lanka

May 30, Colombo: The Ministry of Highways, under the instruction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has appointed a three-member committee to probe the collapse of an underground pedestrian bridge several days ago.

S. Amarasekara, the Ministry Secretary, said the initial report of this special committee will be handed over to President Rajapaksa within two weeks.

The committee is working with a specialist engineer from the University of Moratuwa, he added.

One person was killed and another one was injured when the crossing collapsed at the Matara-Colombo expressway at Poddala, Galle.

The deceased has been identified as a nineteen-year-old youth who was ready to face this year’s Advanced Level Examination in biology.
