May 29, Colombo: The Election Secretariat has set up a special programme to ensure the right of franchise for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the upcoming Northern elections.
Additional Elections Commissioner W.P. Sumanasiri said necessary arrangements will be made for IDPs to cast their votes at the nearest polling booths for the upcoming Jaffna and Vavuniya local government polls.
The Election Secretariat will give IDPs currently living in welfare centers the opportunity from June 4 to 11 to apply for the right of franchise.
According to the Election Secretariat, most of the displaced persons in Jaffna are currently living in Puttalam District.
The elections for the Jaffna and Vavuniya local governments will be held in mid-August.
