May 29, Colombo: The Court of Appeal today rejected a petition filed by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) alleging that last year's Eastern Provincial Council election was corrupt.
In the petition, the UNP requested the Court to declare null and void the overall result in the Batticaloa District due to election malpractices.
The petition had cited the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, the Commissioner of Elections, and several others as respondents.
The petitioners had challenged that the Eastern Provincial Council election was corrupt and plagued by election malpractices.
The Court of Appeal dismissed the petition saying that it was not in line with the Elections Act.
