More new houses for Sri Lankan IDPs

May 29, Vavuniya: The Sri Lanka government has decided to build 8750 new temporary houses for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are currently living in government schools in Vavuniya, District Secretary P.M.S. Charles said.
According to Ms. Charles, the new houses will be built on 100 acres of the Manik Farm area in Settikulam, Vavuniya.
The government hopes to settle 33,500 internally displaced persons in these houses, she added.
The estimated cost for this project is Rs. 10.1 million. Ms. Charles said they hope to conclude construction before the end of June.
The main goal of the new houses is to free the schools in Vavuniya where IDPs are now taking shelter.
