May 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition party, the United National Party (UNP), will also contest in the upcoming elections for the Jaffna Municipal Council and Vavuniya Urban Council, said UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.
He said the final decision over the Northern polls will be taken at the party Working Committee meeting on June 9.
The UNP General Secretary said they will contest in the elections to protect the rights of Northern people who suffered “in every corner” over the last few decades.
The acceptance of nominations for the Jaffna Municipal Council and Vavuniya Urban Council elections will begin on June 17 and end on June 24.
The elections will be held between August 4 and 17, government sources said.
Meanwhile, the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance also said yesterday that they would contest in the elections.
