* Cyclone hits India, no threat on Sri Lanka- Met Dept
Tue, May 26, 2009, 07:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka Meteorological Department today said that there was no threat to Sri Lanka due to the cyclone that hit neighboring India and Bangladesh, where more than 85 people were killed so far.

Cyclone Aila hit the south-western coast of Bangladesh Monday afternoon, killing scores and washing away several thousand homes.

The Meteorological Department however said there will be thundershowers in the seas around the island and warned that the Western, southern, southeastern and southwestern seas will be rough.

Bangladesh has launched a major rescue and relief operation Tuesday. Most of the casualties in Bangladesh were reported to be children who had drowned as the cyclone has triggered a tidal surge of 13 feet when it made landfall on Monday.
