June 30, Colombo: The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) of Sri Lanka has taken measures to deploy special units, comprising Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to safeguard the displaced children living in the welfare centers.
The NCPA is to appoint those units with teachers and other persons among the displaced persons who are with a sound knowledge of education.
The chairman of the NCPA, Jagath Wellawaththa said nearly 10,000 displaced children are currently living in the welfare centers in Vavuniya.
The special units are formed to look after the safety of the IDP children and to improve their health conditions immediately.
Meanwhile, the Department of Examination is taking steps to accommodate internally displaced students to take the G. C. E. (A/L) examination in August.
A group of Examination Department officials led by the Commissioner of Examinations, Anura Edirisinghe, have left for Vavuniya today. The group is expected to initiate a search for the students who are waiting to take the forthcoming examinations and proceed on with student counseling tomorrow.
"The Examination Department will arrange examination centers most convenient to these students. In the process, IDP children will get the closest examination centre when sitting for their examinations. Or else, transport will be arranged for them," the Commissioner said.
