Torrential rains increase water levels in Sri Lanka

June 30, Colombo: As a result of the torrential rains lashing the country, several low-lying areas in Ratnapura are reaching the flood situation, District Disaster Management Center said.
Co-coordinating Officer of the District Disaster management Center, Colonel Priyankara Abeyratne said the water levels in Kalu Ganga and several other small rivers in the District have risen.
If the water level in Kalu Ganga increases beyond 19 feet in the Ratnapura region, it is considered as a flood situation, he said. The present water level of Kalu Ganga has risen to17ft. and 8 inches.
According to the sources the water level is increasing further due to the torrential rains.
However, Ratnapura District Disaster management said that they are ready to face any emergency situation.
