* Sri Lanka monk party threatens to withdraw from government if 13th amendment implemented
Mon, Jun 29, 2009, 06:59 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's monk party, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), the political party that represents Sri Lanka's Environment Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka today threatened to withdraw from the government if it implements the 13th amendment.

Speaking at a special press briefing held in Colombo this morning Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka stressed that his party, JHU, is strongly opposed to the idea of giving police powers to provincial councils.

He said that both the 13th and 17th amendments to the countries constitution are totally unnecessary.

According to the Minister the Tamils in the North do not have any problem at the moment excluding food, cloths, safety, and social dignity.

"Therefore no need for a power sharing solution at the moment for the nation," the policy maker of the Jathika Hela Urumaya, Minister Ranawaka said.

According to the Minister, the JHU is strongly opposed to the 13th amendment as it is not suitable for a small country like Sri Lanka.

The reason to oppose the 17th amendment is that it would create several commissions comprising persons appointed by political interferences.

The JHU pointed out that an alternative path should be found to appoint independent commissions.
