June 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has decided to issue birth certificates to the people in the Northern region who have lost their birth certificates during the protracted conflict.

Sri Lanka's Registrar General E.M. Gunasekara said they are to start a special mobile service from July 1st in selected areas of the Northern region of the country to issue the documents.

The Registrar General asked for the support of the people in the Northern Province to make this program a success.

According to the sources, a large number of people in the North are without birth certificates as the documents had been lost or damaged due to the unrest during the last three decades.
