May 31, Colombo: After nearly 20 years fishermen from the south and northwest are now allowed to engage in fishing in the seas off Mannar and Pesalai.
Ministry of Fisheries said that the fishermen from the west could engage in fishing using 28 ft to 30 ft boats.
The Ministry hopes the fish harvest of the southern fishermen would be better after relaxing of restrictions.
In the last few years Indian fishermen had been fishing in those areas, but now it should stop, said the Deputy Minister of Fisheries Neomal Perera.
