No more weapons in Eastern Sri Lanka

July 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police Department today announced that except government security forces and police, any other party could no longer bear weapons in the Eastern Province.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police in the East, Edison Gunathilaka said several main Tamil political parties who bore weapons in the past are also not allowed to carry weapons any more.
According to this new rule, the political parties Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), Ealam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), People's Liberation Organization of Tamil (PLOT), Ealam People's Revolution Liberation Front (EPRLF) are also not allowed to bear the weapons.
Sri Lanka government earlier granted an amnesty period to hand over the weapons belonged to those parties and armed groups, but it was not successful as the authorities expected.
Following the conclusion of the amnesty period the Police department has commenced raids to arrest the people who are bearing weapons.
