Sri Lanka President promotes military commanders

July 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Commander-In-Chief promoted three top Army commanders in their ranks Wednesday.
Brigadiers Prasanna Silva, Shavendra Silva, and Chargie Gallage have been prompted to the rank of Major General with immediate effect, the Media Center for National Security said.
The senior battle commanders were instrumental in the offensive against the Tamil Tiger rebels in the North and bringing the decades old war to a conclusion with a victory under the command of current Chief of Defence Staff and then Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka.
Brigadier Shavendra Silva was the Commander of the Army's 58 Division who led the troops southward along the strip of no-fire zone in Mullaitivu while Brigadier Chargie Gallage was the Commanding Officer of the 59 Division marched northwards along the strip before the final battle.
Brigadier Prasanna de Silva was the General Officer Commanding 55th Infantry Division of Army that was supporting behind the 58 Division from North.
All three commanders played vital roles in the final battle against the LTTE rebels who were boxed in the narrow strip of land along with nearly 70,000 civilians.
