Death threats to TNA candidates in Northern Sri Lanka

July 29, Colombo: Ahead of the upcoming local government election in Northern Province, several candidates of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) have received death threats, the election monitors said.
The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said that three candidates of the TNA in Vavuniya District, P. Paramsothy, N. Madiharan and P. Sellathurai have received death threats from unidentified groups.
These three candidates have lodged complaints at the Vavuniya police over the death threats, the CMEV said.
Meanwhile, the election monitoring groups said they have received 56 election related violence complaints ahead of the Uva provincial polls and Northern local council polls.
According to the monitors the most number of complaints have been received against the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance.
