Sri Lankan river auctioned for gem mining

July 03, Colombo: For the first time in Sri Lanka history one of the main rivers in the country was auctioned yesterday for gem mining.
The Gem and Jewelry Authority said that they have auctioned one-kilometer area of the Kalu Ganga in Kahangamuwa for Rs. 30.6 million.
However several environmental organizations and small gem businessmen strongly opposed this auction.
Meanwhile, Gem and Jewelry Authority has auctioned a part of the weekly fair at Kahawaththa in Rathnapura too for Rs. 4.3 million.
