* Travel restrictions to Sri Lanka's North eased
Thu, Jul 2, 2009, 06:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has decided to relax some restrictions maintained at the joint road block in Medawachchiya, the main entrance to the country's Northern region.

The Police Headquarters announced that the government has taken this decision following the successful conclusion of the drawn-out war.

According to the Police Headquarters, travelers from the South are now allowed to cross the Medawachchiya check point without stringent checking that was maintained for several years as a security measure.

However, the people who wish to reach the Southern part of the country through this check point still have to undergo former checking procedures.

Also, it is no longer required to unload the trucks carrying cargo to the North at the checkpoint and reload them after the checking,

The Police Headquarters said although several restrictions were lifted, special permits issued by the security forces are still needed for the people to cross the Medawachchiya security check point.
