Sri Lanka warns people as flood threat looms in many areas

July 01, Colombo: Sri Lankan authorities warned people in many low-lying areas specially in Kegalle and Ratnapura districts to be alert for floods as water levels in many main rivers and water reservoirs continue to rise.
The authorities warned the residents in Kitulgala, Yatiyantota, Avissawella and Hanwella areas to be vigilant as the Maussakele reservoir reached spill level.
Meanwhile Kalu Ganga, which runs across the Ratnapura City, continued to rise due to the incessant raining in the country and threatening many low-lying areas of flooding. Ratnapura and its suburbs have received the highest rainfall.
In Ratnapura, the tributaries Hangamu Ganga, We Ganga and Denawaka Ganga are in spate due to the incessant rains.
Water levels of Gin Ganga in Galle too have increased and several low-lying areas such as Baddegama, Welivitiya, Divitura, are already inundated.
