* A new local government body for Eastern Sri Lanka

July 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has established a new local council (Pradeshiya Sabha) in the Digamadulla District of Eastern Sri Lanka.

According to the Ministry of Local Government, Provincial Council Minister Janaka Bandara Thennakoon has established the Pradeshiya Sabha by a special gazette notification.

The new Pradeshiya Sabha named Irakkamam will consist of seven members and twelve Grama Niladhari (Village officer) Divisions. The new local body will commence its first term from April next year, the Ministry said.

With this new Pradeshiya Sabha the total number of local government bodies in Sri Lanka has risen to 331.
