Wed, Jul 1, 2009, 08:13 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 01, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), a main Muslim political party in the country today filed a petition with the Supreme Court against the rejection of its nominations for the Jaffna Municipal Council elections.

Acting General Secretary of the party Nizam Kariapper confirmed to the media that he filed the petition at the Supreme Court this morning.

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has named the Elections Commissioner and the Jaffna Returning Officer among others as the respondents.

The SLMC pointed out in its petition that its nomination was rejected citing a discrepancy in the affidavit and the birth certificate of one of its youth candidates.

According to the SLMC, the Jaffna Retaining Officer has overextended his powers to reject the party's nominations list.
