Religious ceremonies in Jaffna to usher the first New Year without war

Dec 31, Jaffna: Sri Lankans are celebrating the arrival of the New Year with Buddhist religious ceremonies today as the Duruthu Full Moon Poya day falls on the New Year's eve.
Sri Lanka Broadcasting Service reports that a large number of people are arriving in Jaffna taking advantage of the recently permitted land transportation services to the peninsula to worship the historic Nagadeepa and Naga Vihara Buddhist temples.
Sri Lankan government lifted all ravel restrictions to the peninsula last month and resumed the public bus services from various cities in the South including Colombo and Kandy.
Numerous religious programs have been organized by the three armed forces and the police at the sacred Buddhist religious places in the North to usher the first New Year in three decades without the war.
Nallur Kovil in Jaffna will also conduct special religious observances in observance of the New Year.
Defence Headquarters this evening will conduct a bodhi pooja pinkama in front of the Palali Bo Tree. Palali Air Force camp, the Kankasanthurai Navy Camp and the 51st and 52nd Battalions have also organized religious ceremonies.
