* Sri Lanka rejects media reports on the appointment of Thai PM as an economic adviser

Dec 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka government today totally rejected the recent media reports that the government is planning to appoint former Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic adviser.

Sri Lanka Foreign Affairs Ministry issuing a statement today said the speculations are baseless.

"With reference to the recent media speculation that former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is poised to be appointed as an economic adviser to the Government of Sri Lanka, the Foreign Ministry wishes to state that these speculations are baseless. The Government would like to categorically deny the information that Thaksin Shinawatra will be appointed as an economic adviser," the Foreign Ministry statement said.

The government assured that such speculations will not anyway affect the excellent bilateral relations that exist between Sri Lanka and Thailand.

"During a telephone conversation Thai Foreign Minister Mr. Kasit Piromya had with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama yesterday, the latter assured that the Government of Sri Lanka greatly values the relationship with the government and the people of Thailand, and will not allow any room for jeopardising the warm relations that exist between the two countries. Both ministers also discussed ways of strengthening future cooperation," the Foreign Ministry statement added.

The Thailand daily Bangkok Post quoting a former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat said in a news report yesterday (30) that Sri Lanka preparing to appoint former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra its economic adviser.

The report further said that Somchai, Thaksin's brother-in-law, has told the Thai government not to worry because Thaksin's role as adviser to Sri Lanka, as well as to Cambodia, would do no harm to Thailand.
