Dec 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka's election monitoring group Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) says that there is no transparency in election campaign financing of the presidential candidates for the upcoming election.
Speaking to the Sri Lankan daily, Daily Mirror yesterday CaFFE director Keerti Tennakoon said a massive amount of money is received by the election campaigns of the presidential candidates but no effort had been made to inform the public of the sources of these funds.
"The citizens of the country have the right to know who is responsible for funding these campaigns and how their incomes are generated. Furthermore, we must be informed as to whether these people are being taxed on the financing of political campaigns. These are unknown," Tennakoon was quoted.
Tennekoon urged the Inland Revenue Department to take the matter into their hands as the IRD is able to investigate the funding sources through the legal provisions of the Inland Revenue Act and the Money Laundering Act.
