Sri Lanka police after arrested monk's driver

Dec 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka police department is pursuing to apprehend the driver of the Buddhist monk who was earlier arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department for defrauding people promising jobs overseas.
The arrested Marxist party monk, Ven. Dambara Amila Thera's driver Vishan Janith Wellalage of Ballapitiya, Horana is wanted by the police in connection with the charges of taking money from unsuspected individuals promising to provide jobs in Korea. The suspect is evading the arrest.
According to the police spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police I.M. Karunaratne, the CID has received three complaints against the monk accusing him of defrauding over Rs 400,000 from three people.
The police have requested a statement from the Ven. Amila thera but his failure to do so prompted the CID to arrest him, the spokesman said.
The arrest of the monk, who is supportive of General Fonseka's election campaign, has set up a political storm in the country. Supporters of the thera say that the driver is the one who has swindled the money and the monk was arrested on a political vendetta.
