* Sri Lanka eases fishing restrictions in the East

Dec 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has lifted the fishing restrictions imposed on the fishermen in the East in a move to uplift the country's fishing industry.

The Sri Lankan Navy held an awareness meeting on facilities extended to fishing communities and the recent lifting of fishing restrictions in Muttur on Tuesday (Dec 29).

Over 450 fishermen representing 25 fisheries societies from Muttur and Kinniya attended the meeting. Muttur has 1,798 fishermen with 500 'Theppan' (locally made fishing craft) and 221 dinghies operational while Kinniya has 2,661 fishermen with 945 Theppan and 84 dinghies.

The Commander of the Eastern Naval Area Rear Admiral SMB Weerasekera explained in detail the provisions under implementation with regard to fishing and the fishermen's professional welfare.

Sri Lanka Navy has taken adequate measures to provide security to fishermen and conducts search and rescue operations when they are in distress in deep seas, the commander explained.

Naval officers hold periodic meetings with fisheries society representatives and relevant government officials to help solve industry-related issues and to improve the professional welfare and safety of fishermen concerned, the fishermen were informed.

Minister of Cooperatives Najeeb A. Majeed, Eastern Province Governor Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama, and several members of the Eastern Provincial Council and the Muttur Pradeshiya Sabha were also present on the occasion.

With the lifting of fishing restrictions under the Navy's facilitation, fishing communities have resumed their traditional livelihoods with greater freedom and freer access to fishing grounds helping the country's economy.
