Dec 30, Colombo: The government today denied the opposition parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera's allegations that the welfare funds of the Civil Defence Force were misused by the government.
Speaking to the media, Director General of the Civil Security Force Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera said the MP's statement given to a TV station, that 150 million rupees from the "Sena Vidayaka" and "Yaha Sadaka" welfare funds were used for the presidential campaign is totally false.
The Director General said the funds were used solely for the welfare of the civil security personnel clarifying that 250 rupees was deducted from the salaries of the personnel for the "Yaha Sadaka" and another 10 rupees was charged for the "Sena Vidayaka" as administrative costs.
Admiral Weerasekera elaborated that there is a constitution and a proper committee in charge of the funds and dispersing the money follows proper methods.
In addition a special government audit officer has been appointed to audit the funds and there is no valid reason to allege misuse except to mislead the public and tarnish the government's image.
