Central Bank clarifies the issue of 1000 rupee note with President's image

Dec 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka Central Bank today issued a clarification on its recent release of a 1000-rupee note with the image of the country's President on one side of the note.
The commemorative note issued in the denomination of Rupees 1000 to mark the ushering of peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka has come under criticism from some quarters of the country as a political tool for the President.
The Central Bank said today that it is issuing the clarification to clear any doubt that may arise due to the misleading statements by "a few individuals who have obviously not properly understood the circumstances behind the issue of this commemorative note."
The Bank said from time to time it issues notes and coins that depict the living persons to mark events or people of national importance.
The decision to issue a note was taken immediately after the war has concluded on May 19th and the process took six months to issue the note. The Bank released the note on November 17th.
The Bank providing information on several previous occasions where a living leader's image was used in a coin or a note said it has followed usual procedures as well as been consistent with traditional practices, in the issue of this new currency note.
