* Media Minister challenges opposition to prove corruption charges
Wed, Dec 30, 2009, 03:08 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena today challenged the opposition to prove that the Rajapaksa family had engaged in corrupt activities.

Addressing the media at his Ministry today, the Minister said the opposition charges of corruption are baseless and they are canards to sling mud at the President during the election campaign.

"Opposition is using certain media to sling mud at the Rajapaksas making frivolous charges that they have purchased hospitals, land and many things in the country," he said.

The Minister asked the opposition to produce documentary evidence to prove that such purchases have been made by the Rajapaksas.

Referring to the opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka's promise of a 10,000 rupees pay hike per person, Minister Abeywardena said the opposition candidate promises many things like the "Santa Claus" but those are beyond reality.

"The Treasury will go bankrupt if those pledges are met," he said.

The Minister told the media that the next part of the President's manifesto will be released between January 3 - 10.
