Dec 30, Colombo: Two members of the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), Sri Lanka's Indian origin Tamil Party representing plantation Tamils, resigned from their party and joined the main opposition United National Party to support opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka's campaign.
CWC National Organizer and former MP, R. Yogarajan and Deputy Minister of Education M. Satchithananthan today told reporters at a media conference that they have resigned from the CWC, which is a constituent party of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, R. Yogarajan said that his conscience has emerged over his loyalty and decided to resign from his party to support the Fonseka's campaign.
Yogarajan said he had decided to join the UNP as recent provincials council elections in the plantation areas had shown that the people of Indian origin are not supportive of the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
"The war is over, but the conflict is not. We feel that political solution can come only from another regime and a regime in which UNP is a part. There has to be a change of government," he said.
Earlier this month Yogarajan expressed his unconditional support to the incumbent President saying that it was the President who initiated action to develop the estate sector and improve the living standards of the estate population.
