* Country is more important than presidency - Sri Lanka President
Fri, Dec 25, 2009, 10:59 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa says he is forced to focus on rescuing the country from disgrace instead of preparing for the presidential election as statements and actions of certain people discrediting the country have created a conducive environment for hostile forces.

Addressing a meeting with medical professionals, academics, agricultural officers, and senior citizens at the President's House in Kandy yesterday (24) the President said the country is more important to him than the top post and he is prepared for any sacrifice.

"This country belongs to the future generation. It is essential to preserve the reputation of the country to create an environment where they could live in dignity," he said.

The President said there were instances he had to sternly clarify that Sri Lanka is not a colony or a state under the command of a foreign force when he had to face various international influences during the humanitarian operation in the North.

He said he was able to overcome those challenges because he acted on a policy that benefitted the country.

The President promised to take the challenge to develop the country and restore the reputation of the country.
