Dec 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka railway authorities said the train services on the Mahawa-Anuradhapura rail track interrupted by the derailment of south-bound Colombo-Vavuniya train will be restored this afternoon.

Three rail cars of the Colombo-bound night mail train from Vavuniya derailed between Senerathgama and Galgamuwa at about 1:45 this morning, Railways Main Control Room said. One of the rails cars had rolled down to a paddy field.

The accident injured 28 people and 14 remain hospitalized. Seriously injured have been admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital while others are hospitalized in Galgamuwa base hospital. Five women and four children were among the injured, hospital sources said.

The cause for the derailment is not yet known.
